Forgot UPI PIN? How to Reset It Safely in India

By FinancialEssentials.in Editorial TeamPublished: 29 August 2026Last updated: 29 August 202610-minute read

Forgetting a UPI PIN is inconvenient, but it is not a reason to panic or keep guessing. The safe route is to use the reset option inside a trusted UPI app, complete a verification method supported by your bank and create a new PIN privately. The exact screens may differ, but the security principles remain the same.

Use only the reset option inside your verified banking or UPI app, and keep every PIN and OTP private.

Quick summary: If you remember the old PIN, use “Change UPI PIN.” If you have forgotten it, use “Reset” or “Forgot UPI PIN” for the correct bank account. Verification may use debit-card details, Aadhaar-based OTP or Aadhaar-linked face authentication where the bank and app support it. Availability varies. Never share your PIN or OTP, approve a collect request or send money to complete a reset.

What a UPI PIN does—and what it does not do

A UPI PIN is the four- or six-digit code used to authorise eligible bank-account transactions through UPI. NPCI explains that the PIN is created when a bank account is registered for UPI and is entered when a payment requires authorisation. The app does not need to reveal or store the PIN in readable form for customer support.

The UPI PIN is not the same as the passcode that opens your payment app. It is also different from your phone lock, debit-card PIN, ATM PIN, internet-banking password and OTP. Keeping these roles separate makes troubleshooting easier. If the app opens but a payment fails after PIN entry, the problem may be the UPI PIN. If the app itself will not open, resetting the UPI PIN may not solve it.

Entering a PIN means you are approving a debit or another protected bank action. You do not enter a UPI PIN to receive ordinary money. This single rule prevents many refund, reward and “money received by mistake” scams. Read the UPI fraud red-flags guide before responding to an unfamiliar payment request.

Change UPI PIN vs reset UPI PIN

The two options solve different problems. Use the change option when you still know the current PIN but want a new one—for example, because someone may have seen it. Use the reset option when you cannot remember the old PIN or the app specifically asks you to re-establish it.

Menu names differ. One app may show “Forgot UPI PIN,” another “Reset UPI PIN,” and another may place the option under the linked bank account. Always confirm that you selected the correct account, especially if several accounts are connected to the same app.

How to reset a forgotten UPI PIN step by step

  1. Open the official app. Use the UPI or mobile-banking app already installed from a trusted app store. Avoid links sent through messages.
  2. Open bank-account settings. Select the bank account whose UPI PIN you forgot.
  3. Choose reset or forgot PIN. Do not choose “change” if the screen requires the old PIN you cannot remember.
  4. Select an available verification method. Your app may show debit-card details, an Aadhaar-based route or another supported option.
  5. Complete verification privately. Enter only the requested details inside the app. Never tell them to a caller.
  6. Enter the bank OTP if requested. Read the message to confirm what the OTP authorises before entering it.
  7. Create and confirm the new PIN. Avoid obvious patterns and do not reuse a PIN known to another person.
  8. Check the result carefully. Use a balance enquiry or a small genuine payment only if appropriate; never pay a “support agent” to test the reset.

NPCI's 2026 BHIM-UPI guidelines illustrate a reset flow using the last six digits and expiry date of a debit card followed by an OTP and new PIN. Your bank or app may present a different supported flow, so follow the on-screen instructions rather than copying a stranger's screenshots.

Never share the reset screen. A scammer using screen-sharing software can watch card details, OTPs and the new PIN as you enter them. A genuine support person can explain where the option is but does not need to see or control your screen.

UPI PIN verification methods you may see

Debit-card verification

The app may request the last six digits and expiry date of the debit card linked to the account, followed by an issuer OTP. The full card number, ATM PIN and CVV should not be disclosed to a caller.

Aadhaar OTP route

Some eligible bank-app combinations may offer Aadhaar-based verification. The bank account and Aadhaar linkage, registered mobile number and participating systems must satisfy the applicable conditions.

Aadhaar face authentication

NPCI now describes Aadhaar-linked face authentication as an additional set/reset option. It may redirect to the authorised UIDAI face service and then require a bank OTP. Availability is not universal.

Do not assume that every method appears in every app. The issuing bank, UPI app, account type, mobile registration and rollout stage all matter. If your friend sees face authentication but you see only debit-card verification, that difference does not automatically mean your app is outdated or unsafe.

New authentication choices are intended to improve access, not to make the old methods invalid overnight. NPCI's October 2025 circular describes additional methods as optional and says users may continue with existing methods. Check the current app and bank support pages before relying on a feature.

Can you reset a UPI PIN without a debit card?

Possibly, but only when your bank and UPI app offer an eligible alternative. Aadhaar OTP and Aadhaar-linked face authentication may allow set or reset without entering debit-card credentials in supported cases. You may need Aadhaar linked to the bank account, the correct registered mobile number and the required official verification service on your device.

If no alternative appears, do not try to bypass the app through an unofficial website. Contact the bank using its verified customer-care or branch channel and ask which account-verification routes it supports. A newly opened account, expired card, replaced card or bank-side restriction can affect what the app accepts.

A person who does not have a usable debit card should treat “no card needed” advertisements carefully. The only safe no-card method is one presented through the official bank or UPI workflow. No agent can create a legitimate reset by collecting your Aadhaar image, OTP and selfie over a messaging app.

What happens after repeated wrong UPI PIN attempts?

NPCI says multiple wrong PIN entries may cause the bank to temporarily block UPI sending, and the exact treatment varies by bank. Once you are unsure, stop guessing. Repeated attempts do not help you remember the PIN and may extend inconvenience.

A temporary UPI restriction does not necessarily mean your bank account itself is frozen. Other banking channels may still work according to their own controls. Check the exact error message, wait for the bank-defined period where appropriate or use the reset route. Contact official support if the message is unclear.

If the failed transaction also debited money, handle that separately. The UPI payment failure guide explains status and complaint checks, while debited but not credited covers delayed bank transfers. Resetting a PIN does not automatically resolve an unrelated transaction dispute.

Three practical examples

Forgotten after months of non-use

Rohit has not used one bank account on UPI for six months. Instead of trying several familiar numbers, he selects that account, chooses reset, verifies with the linked debit-card details and OTP, and creates a new PIN privately.

Expired debit card

Meena's old card has expired, so its details fail during reset. Her app does not show an alternative method. She stops, checks that the replacement card is activated and contacts the bank through its official app rather than giving card details to a search-result phone number.

Senior user receives a fake call

Mr Kumar is told that his UPI PIN will expire unless he shares an OTP. His daughter reminds him that support never asks for the PIN. They end the call, open the official app independently and find no warning. The fake bank alert guide helps them review the message.

Family assistance should focus on explaining the steps—not asking the account holder to reveal the PIN or OTP.

Why a UPI PIN reset may not work

Mobile or SIM mismatch

The app usually needs the SIM connected to the mobile number registered with the bank. Check SIM selection, SMS permission, outgoing SMS ability and network availability.

Card details rejected

The linked card may be expired, replaced, inactive or not the correct card for that account. Enter only the requested digits and expiry date inside the official flow.

OTP does not arrive

Network delays, bank-side issues, message filtering or an outdated registered number may be involved. Do not request OTPs continuously or disclose one when it arrives late.

Alternative method missing

Aadhaar OTP or face authentication may not be supported by that bank-app combination. Missing availability is not permission to use an unofficial service.

Temporary security block

Repeated wrong attempts or risk controls can pause UPI sending. Read the error and follow the bank's official waiting or reset instructions.

New phone or app

A phone, SIM or application change can require UPI re-registration and device verification before the account and PIN work normally.

If your phone is lost, do not wait merely because transactions need a PIN. Follow the steps in Lost Phone with UPI to block the SIM, secure banking access and contact the bank. If money went to an unintended person, use the wrong UPI transfer guide rather than repeatedly resetting the PIN.

Smart UPI PIN safety checklist

Do

  • Use the official app and verified bank support
  • Read OTP messages before entering the code
  • Keep the registered SIM under your control
  • Use a PIN that is hard for others to guess
  • Review linked accounts and mandates regularly
  • Act quickly if someone has seen the PIN

Do not

  • Share a PIN, OTP or screen with support
  • Use a birth year or obvious repeated pattern
  • Approve a collect request to receive money
  • Scan a QR code for a supposed refund
  • Install remote-access software for help
  • Keep guessing after several failed attempts

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I forget my UPI PIN?

Open the linked bank account inside your trusted UPI app, choose reset or forgot PIN, complete an available bank-supported verification method and create a new PIN.

What is the difference between changing and resetting?

Changing normally requires the current PIN. Resetting is for a forgotten PIN and uses fresh account or identity verification supported by the bank and app.

Can I reset without a debit card?

Some eligible bank-app combinations may offer Aadhaar OTP or Aadhaar-linked face authentication. Use only the methods displayed inside the official app.

Is face authentication available everywhere?

No. NPCI describes it as an additional option, while actual availability depends on the bank, app, account linkage, device and rollout.

Why is my PIN temporarily blocked?

Multiple wrong entries may cause a temporary sending restriction, with treatment varying by bank. Stop guessing and use the official reset or support route.

Is the UPI PIN the same as my ATM PIN?

No. The UPI PIN, debit-card or ATM PIN, app passcode, phone lock and OTP serve different purposes.

Does changing my UPI app change the PIN?

Not necessarily. The PIN is connected to the bank account, although a new app, phone or SIM can require registration and device verification.

Will bank support ask for my PIN or OTP?

No legitimate support agent needs your UPI PIN. Never share it, approve a collect request or provide remote screen access for a reset.

What if reset still fails?

Check the registered SIM, network, card status and available verification route, then contact the bank or app through verified support. Avoid repeated guesses.

Conclusion

A forgotten UPI PIN is a routine security problem, not an emergency that requires outside help. Choose reset instead of guessing, verify the correct bank account through an option your app genuinely offers, and create the new PIN away from other people and cameras.

New options such as Aadhaar-linked face authentication may make resetting easier, but availability varies and safe behaviour does not change: never reveal a PIN or OTP, never pay to unlock a reset and never let a caller control your screen. When the official flow does not work, stop and contact the bank through a verified channel.
