EMI formula
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)
P is the car loan principal, r is annual rate divided by 12 and 100, and n is months. At 0%, EMI is P ÷ n. Results use a fixed-rate reducing-balance assumption and are rounded to the nearest rupee.
Worked Indian example
A financed amount of ₹8,00,000 at 9% annually for 60 months gives:
| Monthly EMI | ₹16,607 |
|---|---|
| Total interest | ₹1,96,401 |
| Total repayment | ₹9,96,401 |
This excludes the down payment and all ownership costs. A lower EMI does not automatically mean the car is affordable.
How to interpret the result
The EMI covers only the financed loan under the chosen assumptions. Total repayment shows principal plus interest, while the real ownership budget also includes costs outside the loan.
Common mistakes
- Entering the showroom price instead of financed amount.
- Stretching tenure without comparing total interest.
- Ignoring bundled insurance or accessories in principal.
- Using the entire monthly surplus for EMI.
Practical vehicle-budget checks
- Compare on-road price, not only ex-showroom price.
- Keep cash available after down payment.
- Budget insurance renewal and maintenance.
- Check foreclosure and hypothecation-removal terms.
- Consider depreciation when choosing the vehicle.
