How to use the calculator

  1. Confirm the principal when EMI begins.
  2. Enter the applicable annual rate.
  3. Use the repayment tenure after any moratorium.
  4. Review EMI, interest and total repayment.
  5. Open the schedule to see principal and interest each month.

Formula and assumptions

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ [(1 + r)n − 1]

P is principal, r is annual rate divided by 12 and 100, and n is whole repayment months. At 0%, EMI is principal divided by months.

Worked Indian example

A borrower enters ₹12,00,000, an illustrative 10.25% annual rate and seven years.

Estimated monthly EMI₹20,077
Estimated total interest₹4,86,449
Estimated total repayment₹16,86,449

If moratorium interest increases principal before repayment, using only the original disbursal would understate the EMI.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring interest accrued before EMI starts.
  • Entering course cost instead of actual loan principal.
  • Choosing the longest tenure only for a low EMI.
  • Assuming future salary or currency rates are certain.

Practical tips

  • Separate tuition, living costs and contingency.
  • Confirm disbursal and moratorium treatment.
  • Compare total interest across tenures.
  • Keep academic and lender documents organized.
  • Review prepayment terms after income begins.
