CASHBACK SBI Card: fees, benefits and practical review

A plain-English guide to who this card may suit, what it costs, how its benefits work and where its limitations matter.

Product summary

This card is built around direct cashback rather than a points catalogue. Its attraction is the broad online rate, but the value depends on merchant coding, exclusions and the separate online and offline monthly caps introduced from 1 April 2026. It suits a disciplined cardholder who can identify genuinely eligible online purchases without shifting essential payments onto the card just for rewards.

Editorial position: A reward card is useful only when it fits expenses you already make, its usable value exceeds its cost, and you pay the total amount due on time. FinancialEssentials.in does not guarantee approval.

Key benefits at a glance

Feature 1

Rewards structure

5% on eligible online spends and 1% on eligible offline spends; separate ₹2,000 online and offline caps per statement cycle from 1 April 2026

Feature 2

Travel access

1% fuel-surcharge waiver on eligible ₹500–₹3,000 transactions, capped at ₹100 per statement cycle

Benefits are governed by the issuer’s current terms. Merchant category, posting date, payment channel, refunds and EMI conversion can affect eligibility. Treat marketing percentages as the start of research, not the final decision.

Fees and the real cost of ownership

ItemCurrent summaryWhat to check
Joining fee₹999 + applicable taxesWhen charged and whether a welcome benefit requires payment
Annual fee₹999 + applicable taxesTaxes and the anniversary date
WaiverRenewal fee reversed on annual spends of ₹2,00,000 or moreEligible spend and reversal timing
Finance chargesIssuer schedule appliesCost when the full bill is not paid

A fee waiver is not a reason to overspend. Compare the fee plus taxes with benefits you will genuinely use. Cash withdrawal, late-payment, over-limit, forex, rent, utility and redemption charges may apply even when the membership fee is nil.

How rewards or cashback work

5% on eligible online spends and 1% on eligible offline spends; separate ₹2,000 online and offline caps per statement cycle from 1 April 2026

Separate the programme into eligible rate, base rate, caps, exclusions, posting time and redemption value. A point is not automatically worth one rupee. Cashback can be reversed after a refund or cancellation. Save the issuer terms when applying and compare them with each statement.

Important caps and exclusions

  • The 5% headline does not cover every online payment.
  • Online and offline cashback have separate statement-cycle caps.
  • A ₹999 renewal fee remains relevant if normal spending does not reach the waiver threshold.
  • Interest, late fees or unplanned shopping can exceed the cashback earned.

The issuer controls transaction classification. A grocery-looking merchant may use a different code, while a wallet or aggregator payment may be treated differently from a direct card purchase.

Illustrative spending example

Meera spends ₹18,000 online on eligible retail purchases and ₹7,000 at eligible physical stores in one statement cycle. At the published rates, the indicative cashback is ₹900 online and ₹70 offline, or ₹970 before reversals. A ₹4,000 insurance payment and ₹3,000 utility payment are excluded and should not be included. If her online eligible spending rises to ₹50,000, the 5% calculation is ₹2,500 but the online cap limits that part to ₹2,000. This is an illustration, not a promise; posting dates and merchant classification control the actual result.

Important: This educational example does not include every exclusion, tax, posting delay, reversal or programme change and is not a guaranteed return.

Who may consider this card?

Consider CASHBACK SBI Card when normal spending matches online cashback, the issuer’s criteria are met and benefits remain worthwhile after fees. You also need a reliable system for checking statements and paying the full balance.

Consider an alternative when

Choose a simpler or lower-fee option when you rarely use the highlighted categories, dislike tracking caps, cannot use the reward currency or may carry a balance. If repayment is difficult, stop optimising rewards and use the Credit Card Payoff Calculator.
