Quick editorial view

The ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver Credit Card is a partner fuel card rather than a universal petrol-pump card. Its strongest advertised value depends on eligible purchases at HPCL outlets or through the HP Pay app. It can also reward qualifying grocery, utility and department-store spending, but those everyday rewards have a monthly cap. The card therefore suits a reader who already uses HPCL regularly, pays the total bill on time and is willing to check conditions.

The ₹500 annual fee is modest compared with many premium cards, but the card is not automatically profitable. Your actual value depends on qualifying fuel volume, the ₹200 monthly fuel-cashback cap, everyday reward caps, the annual-fee waiver and whether you genuinely use secondary benefits. Interest, late fees or unnecessary spending can erase a year of savings quickly.

Bottom line: Consider this card for planned HPCL fuel purchases, not because “up to 5%” sounds attractive in isolation. Calculate benefit after caps, annual fee and taxes, and verify current terms before applying.

How the “up to 5%” HPCL fuel saving works

The headline fuel saving is not one unconditional 5% cashback payment. ICICI Bank’s current product page explains it as two separate parts: 4% cashback plus a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver. The 4% cashback is capped at ₹200 per month. The surcharge waiver applies to eligible fuel transactions between ₹400 and ₹4,000. This distinction matters because a transaction may satisfy one rule but not another, and each component may appear differently on the statement.

Fuel componentCurrent official summaryPractical check
Fuel cashback4% on qualifying HPCL fuel purchasesCapped at ₹200 per month
Fuel-surcharge waiver1% on qualifying transactionsTransaction amount should be ₹400–₹4,000
Combined headlineUp to 5% fuel savingsDo not treat every HPCL payment as an automatic 5% return
HP PayAdditional 1.5% Happy Coins on eligible HP Pay fuel purchases at HPCLHP Pay programme and redemption rules are separate

If you spend ₹8,000 a month on fuel, 4% would mathematically equal ₹320, but the stated monthly cashback cap limits that component to ₹200. The surcharge waiver must then be calculated separately and only for eligible transaction values. A reader who fills fuel in one ₹5,000 transaction may not qualify for the stated waiver range, while smaller eligible transactions can be treated differently.

Payment routing also matters. The official page says the card can be used at HPCL pumps on a bank POS terminal and through HP Pay, but merchant coding, posting, refunds and programme rules can affect the outcome. Keep the receipt for initial transactions, compare it with the statement and raise discrepancies through official ICICI Bank channels.

Daily-essential rewards and normal retail spending

The card’s second use case is eligible everyday spending. ICICI Bank currently states that utility, grocery and department-store purchases earn 20 ICICI Bank Reward Points per ₹100, described on the official page as 5% cashback-equivalent value. The accelerated bucket is capped at 400 reward points per month. Other eligible retail spending earns 2 points per ₹100.

Do not assume that every shop that sells groceries will use the expected merchant category code. A supermarket inside an online marketplace, a wallet load or an aggregator transaction may be classified differently. Likewise, taxes, rent, government payments, education payments, EMI transactions, fees, refunds, reversals and other excluded transactions may not count toward rewards or spend thresholds under current issuer terms.

Reward points also need a redemption route. Before valuing them, check the current catalogue, conversion rate, expiry rules and any handling charge. The number of points earned is not the same as cash received. If you do not redeem the points for something you would otherwise buy, their personal value may be lower than the headline presentation suggests.

Fees and decision-relevant charges

Charge or ruleCurrent summaryWhat it means
Joining fee₹500 + GSTInitial ownership cost; confirm when charged
Annual fee₹500 + GSTRecurring cost from the applicable renewal year
Annual-fee waiverSpend over ₹1.5 lakh in an anniversary yearOnly eligible spending counts; EMI and other exclusions can apply
Forex markup3.5%Relevant for foreign-currency transactions, before applicable taxes
Revolving/cash interestOfficial page currently states 3.75% per monthCan apply when only minimum due is paid or cash is withdrawn
Late-payment chargeOfficial page lists ₹100–₹1,300Depends on current issuer schedule and outstanding amount

The annual-fee waiver should be treated as a possible saving, not a spending target. If your normal eligible card spending is ₹1.2 lakh, spending another ₹30,000 only to avoid a ₹500 fee is poor arithmetic. The current MITC also states that some categories and transaction types do not count for fee reversal. Check the official MITC for the complete, current fee schedule and exclusions.

Illustrative annual-value example

Assume Meera drives to work and already buys ₹5,000 of fuel each month at a nearby HPCL outlet. She also places ₹3,000 of eligible monthly grocery and utility spending on the card. She always pays the total amount due and does not spend extra to chase a waiver.

AssumptionSimple estimateImportant limitation
Fuel cashback₹200 monthly cap × 12 = up to ₹2,400Assumes qualifying HPCL transactions reach the cap each month
Surcharge waiverCalculate separatelyOnly qualifying ₹400–₹4,000 transactions; statement treatment matters
Daily-essential pointsUp to the 400-point monthly capActual rupee value depends on redemption and eligibility
Annual card fee₹500 + GST if not waivedWaiver depends on eligible anniversary-year spending
Movie/lounge valueCount only when genuinely usedBoth require qualifying spending and separate conditions

This example shows why a single inflated “annual saving” figure can mislead. Meera can reasonably start with the capped fuel cashback, then add only the surcharge reversals and reward redemptions that actually post. She should subtract the fee and taxes if the waiver is not achieved. She should not assign full retail value to a lounge visit or movie discount she would not otherwise use.

Illustrative example — actual rewards depend on eligible transactions and current issuer terms. It excludes possible taxes, redemption costs, reversals, interest, late fees and programme changes. It is not a guaranteed return.

Lounge access: the spend condition is essential

The card is currently described as offering one domestic airport lounge visit per quarter, but that sentence is incomplete without the condition. ICICI Bank states that the primary cardholder must spend ₹75,000 or more in a calendar quarter to receive the lounge benefit in the following calendar quarter. The benefit is not automatically available merely because the card is active.

Excluded transactions may not count toward the threshold. If your natural quarterly spending is much lower, do not accelerate purchases merely to unlock one visit. Compare the cost of an occasional lounge visit with the financial and behavioural cost of chasing ₹75,000. Also confirm the current participating lounge list and entry process before travelling.

Movie benefit: current 2026 qualification rule

The official page currently lists 25% off up to ₹100 when buying at least two tickets through BookMyShow or INOX, up to twice a month. From 1 April 2026, eligibility requires ₹25,000 or more of eligible spending during the preceding spend quarter, which unlocks the offer for the following quarter.

This means the monthly booking limit alone does not guarantee access. The prior-quarter requirement, eligible-spend definition, card variant and booking terms all matter. Add-on or Plus card members must separately meet the stated qualifying spend for their own offer. Treat the movie benefit as a small secondary saving, not a reason to choose the card.

Roadside assistance and RuPay-variant extras

ICICI Bank lists round-the-clock roadside assistance, including help for certain breakdown situations. The detailed service scope, distance limits, actual-cost items, geographic coverage and exclusions are controlled by the applicable product terms and service provider. The official FAQ states that payment of the joining or annual fee is required to activate roadside assistance.

The official product page also lists personal accident insurance and concierge service for the RuPay variant. These are variant-specific features, not universal promises for every network version. Read the relevant certificate and terms before depending on insurance; check coverage, exclusions, claim requirements and whether the card must remain active and in good standing.

Who may consider this card?

Regular HPCL customer

An HPCL outlet is already convenient and monthly planned fuel spending is sufficient to use the capped benefit.

Full-bill payer

You can pay the total statement amount by the due date, so finance charges do not consume the rewards.

Condition tracker

You are comfortable checking caps, transaction ranges, merchant coding and quarterly qualification rules.

When another card may be better

Look elsewhere if HPCL is inconvenient, your fuel spending is small, you prefer one simple cashback rule, or you may carry a balance. A no-fee everyday card can be more suitable when annual usable value is uncertain. A different fuel card may fit better when your regular outlet is BPCL. If the balance is already difficult to clear, pause reward optimisation and use the Credit Card Payoff Calculator.

Eligibility and safe application

ICICI Bank’s current product page indicates an age range of 21–65 years, Indian citizenship, monthly income of ₹20,000 for salaried applicants and annual income of at least ₹2.4 lakh for self-employed applicants. These are indicative published criteria, not an approval promise. The bank can assess income, existing debt, credit history, location, documents and internal policy.

  1. Read the official product page, MITC and product terms on the day you apply.
  2. Confirm the network variant, joining fee, annual fee and current benefit rules.
  3. Apply only through ICICI Bank’s official website, app, branch or another verified channel.
  4. Never share an OTP, PIN, CVV or full card credentials with an unsolicited caller.
  5. After activation, set transaction controls, statement alerts and a full-payment reminder.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver Credit Card best for?

It is primarily designed for regular qualifying HPCL fuel purchases. Its everyday rewards and conditional lifestyle benefits are secondary. Suitability depends on your normal spending, ability to pay in full and willingness to track caps.

What are the joining and annual fees?

The current official product page lists a ₹500 joining fee plus GST and a ₹500 annual fee plus GST. The current MITC should control if information changes or your application offer differs.

How can the annual fee be waived?

ICICI Bank currently states that spending over ₹1.5 lakh during an anniversary year can qualify for the following year’s fee waiver. EMI transactions and other excluded categories may not count, so check the current MITC.

Is the full 5% fuel benefit cashback?

No. The current explanation combines 4% cashback and a 1% fuel-surcharge waiver. The cashback is capped at ₹200 monthly, while the waiver has an eligible transaction range and separate conditions.

What does HP Pay add?

The official product page currently lists an additional 1.5% in Happy Coins on eligible fuel purchases made through HP Pay at HPCL. Happy Coins follow HP Pay’s own programme and redemption rules.

Do I receive a lounge visit every quarter automatically?

No. At present, the primary cardholder must spend at least ₹75,000 in a calendar quarter to unlock one domestic lounge visit in the following quarter. Verify the current lounge list and exclusions before travel.

How does the movie offer work from April 2026?

The current offer provides 25% off up to ₹100 on at least two tickets, up to twice monthly, but requires ₹25,000 of eligible spending in the preceding spend quarter for use in the next quarter. Booking and variant rules apply.

No. This is independent educational content. ICICI Bank alone decides eligibility, approval, network variant and credit limit, and it can revise product terms.
